The Active Nurturing Playground
Since: 2003
Region: Nationwide
Objective: To address developmental challenges among children aged three to five – especially very young boys – in the Chareidi community, by encouraging skills and abilities through play, and by training kindergarten staff to recognize and deal appropriately with children’s developmental challenges as they arise.
Senso-motor development has a profound effect on the cognitive learning process and on the emotional and social development and wellbeing of children. Ezer Mizion has created the Active Nurturing Playground project, setting up pre-school playgrounds with age and developmentally appropriate apparatus, to ensure the provision of an enriching developmental environment for pre-school children (ages 3-5).
The project educates pre-school educational staff in the importance of senso-motor development and its part in school readiness. The educational staff is trained to use the playground equipment as a tool in identifying and minimizing developmental challenges among their pupils, and to assure early referral to professional therapists where needed. This project empowers the teachers, parents, and community leaders as agents of change in the early childhood development process.
