Building Blocks of Democracy

Since: 2004

Region: The Negev

Objective: To encourage, among children in kindergartens in four communities in the Negev (spanning both Bedouin Arab and various Jewish groups), an equality-based view of other people’s freedoms, through activities appropriate to their ages and relevant to their lives and experiences.

Many democracies today are plural societies where those from different cultures participate in a shared political system. The Adam Institute addresses major divisions in Israeli society by working towards conflict resolution through education toward democracy, and introducing the concepts of human rights, children’s rights, social and political rights, equality and freedom.

The Building Blocks of Democracy project is implemented in kindergartens where young children from many different backgrounds take part in activities that promote living together and resolving conflicts. The program is adapted to the age level and the needs of each group, and is also designed to train the kindergarten staff how to incorporate the activities from the program in the day-to-day running of the kindergarten.
