Family Literacy Programme in St. Lucia

Since: 2008

Region: Caribbean

Objective: To enhance both children’s and adults’ literacy and numeracy skills through a multi-dimensional, integrated programme of child stimulation, early language development and parent education.

Replication of the Roving Caregivers Programme St. Lucia

Since: 2004

Region: Dominica, Greneda, St Lucia

Objective: Under the CSI goal of increasing good practice in parent support in the Caribbean region, the overall aim of this project is to replicate the concept and methodologies of the Roving Caregivers Programme in Dominica, Grenada and St Lucia.

Initially, study visits will be paid to the Roving Caregivers Programme (RCP) in Jamaica by the relevant coordinators and supervisors to help them fully grasp its concept and familiarise themselves with its working methods. After recruitment of the local caregivers, they will be provided with residential training and orientation, with assistance from RCP-Jamaica staff. Then, based on a needs assessment, communities and families will be sensitised and enrolled in the project.

Weekly home visits and regular inservice training, monitoring and assessment of the caregivers’ performance will complete the main aspects to the intervention model. During the visits, the rovers will offer stimulation activities for children in the birth to three-year age bracket, work on interpersonal development and communication skills, and conduct parenting group sessions.

Both local and RCP curriculum materials will be used for training and implementation. In each country, a local implementation committee will meet periodically to review progress, consider the implications for future expansion, and formulate policy priorities. A local project coordinator will be responsible for the management of the projects.
