Al-Tufula introduces children to the world

The Al-Tufula Centre, which works for Palestinian children in Israel, shares in a special issue of its (newsletter (pdf) details of its 2008 Children's Festival, which attracted 1800 participants. The theme of the festival was "Traveling around the World", with Al-Tufula staff introducing children aged 3-8 to other countries, cultures and traditions.

Central America phase-out meetings

The Bernard van Leer Foundation has been phasing out of Central America over the last two years. A series of meetings will now sum up lessons learned to a broad audience of politicians, researchers, practitioners and other organisations with influence over the regional agenda on early childhood - in Nicaragua (17 and 19 September), Guatemala (23 September) and El Salvador (26 September).

EUROCHIPS art exhibit wins new converts

EUROCHIPS email with a positive update on the exhibition of art by children's prisoners held in Paris in March, and covered by Libération: "subsequently exhibited in the lobby of the Justice Ministry/Prison Administration Building... All in all, it has been a great success, with a snowball effect: a small paints workshop for children waiting to see their imprisoned parents has been set up in one Paris prison. The director has agreed to transmit the drawings regularly to the parents; and to exhibit the works inside the prison and during the special extended visits for the end of the year holidays and Father’s Day."

Ultra-Orthodox children visit new kindergarten

Polish preschools project wins recognition

The Comenius Foundation's project Where There Are No Preschools: Promoting Pre-school Education in Rural Areas has won first prize in the Pro Publico Bono Competition, which supports the development of civil society in Poland, for the Best Civil Initiative in Education. The issue championed by foundation partner EUROCHIPS received news coverage recently when Scotland's commissioner for children and young people released a report describing children of imprisoned parents as "invisible victims of crime" whose rights and needs are ignored when sentencing decisions are made.

Update on Venezia Institute's story of George

Following on from this story from the Venezia Institute, this photo shows George - who featured in educational materials about forging links between cultures - speaking to a Hebrew-dominated kindergarten class recently joined by an Arab-speaking child. Nilly Venezia comments: "It was amazing to see how children really were interested in the contents of the story they heard more than a month ago and when George arrived, they started asking him questions about his life."
