A responsabilidade Social no Sertão Paraibano
Since: 2004
Region: Sousa Sertão Paraibano
Objective: The overall objective of the project is to test a cooperative approach among three institutions (SESI, SENAI, SENAR) geared to providing integral services that enhance young rural children’s development in a context of family and community support.
One impact of urban migration from poor areas of rural Brazil has been that, as people move in search of job opportunities, young children are left behind in the care of other relatives. In the state of Paraiba, the ‘Servico Social da Industria’ in Sousa (an industrial civil association) provides preschool, health and sport services to more than 31,000 children, adolescents and adults of this small city. This new phase of support from the Bernard van Leer Foundation is intended to extend the project methodology to the young children and families of three small rural villages in the surrounding area. This new project "A Responsabilidade Social no Sertão-Paraibano" will improve the capacity of extended families to provide care (physical, affective, social and cognitive) to their children from 0 to 6 years of age, and will promote (pre) adolescent participation in the community in planning and conducting ECD services.
