Programa Infância Rural
Since: 2005
Region: Maranhao, Piauí, Ceará, Río Grande do Norte, Paraíba
Objective: To develop a small scale regional intervention programme that fosters early childhood development, and is based on the participation of the young children who grow up in the rural Northeast of Brazil.
The project Programa Infancia Rural do Nordeste will improve children’s quality of life by encouraging them to participate in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes for young children and adolescents. The project will gain a better understanding of the needs and opinions of young children through improved interaction between children and adults; and improve communication between community members and public servants on childrearing practices. These actions will contribute to creating an inclusive society.
The project will build on tested methodologies in which teenagers, parents and other members of rural communities are active in meeting the needs of young children. The counterpart will provide technical assistance for the construction of parques infantis (outdoor playgrounds for children), which will also be used as community meeting points to evaluate children's progress and plan activities.
The project will influence municipal policies for children and adolescents that ensure: a) a better approach to early childhood development in rural contexts; b) a smooth transition between ECD services and school to reduce school drop out rates; c) the inclusion of teenage siblings and adults in family support strategies; and d) to secure learning and sustainability.
