Living Spaces

Since: 2004

Region: United Kingdom

Objective: This project focuses on children under six years of age, and looks at how to ensure their active role in the planning, design and development of both indoor and outdoor spaces. Two in depth case studies will be done using tools from "Listening to Young Children: The Mosaic Approach" for data gathering.

The Thomas Coram Research Unit (TCRU) is part of the Institute of Education (University of London). Its principal function is to carry out multi-disciplinary policy-relevant research. TCRU focuses on children and young people within their families and in other settings such as care, education, health, and social services.

Work on children’s participation began in the mid-1990s and since then TCRU has played a leading role in involving children as active subjects in research, as well as researching methods for increasing their participation in services. This grant includes funding to write "Spaces to Play" publication, which has been done.
