For Ben U Sen Children

Since: 2006

Region: Diyarbakir

Objective: To enable children, in particular those working or susceptible to work on the streets of Diyarbakir, to fully enjoy their rights as set forth in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In addition, it aims at establishing a family support system to preventatively and remedially address the problem of street working children by collaborating with local partners. It will also generate an intervention that can be replicated in other neighbourhoods.

Street-working children is a widespread phenomenon in Turkey. In the eastern and south-eastern regions this problem has been exacerbated by the violent civil war of the 80s and 90s which devastated the country-side. Rural migrants, unprepared for the urban labour market and living in dire conditions in slum areas, force their children to work on the streets. A pilot centre in the Ben U Sen neighbourhood of Diyarbakir will be set up to support the psycho-social development of 4-6 year old children through artistic activities. Parents will be informed of the risks for children working in the streets and the availability of service provisions. It is intended to generate a replicable intervention model that can be used in other neighbourhoods.
