Pedagogical Programme SPOREN

Since: 2005

Region: nationwide

Objective: To stimulate young children’s development in a learning community in which parents, children and teachers actively participate.

The Dutch Ministry of Education estimates that out of the 1,5 million children in primary school, about 400,000 experience language or cognitive disadvantages. Approximately 100,000 of these children, aged between 2 and 5, come from low-income immigrant families and fall under the Dutch Early Childhood Education framework or VVE. This specific educational policy seeks to reduce their language and cognitive disadvantages.

Currently, there are about 20 accredited VVE programmes which municipalities can select according to need and implement with local and central government funds. The project seeks to obtain VVE-accreditation for the SPOREN programme developed during the last seven years by Stichting Pedagogiekontwikkeling 0-7. The programme, which encourages parent participation and acknowledges the social role of childcare and educational services in supporting the emancipation of young children, is suited for use in a multicultural context.
