The project will be implemented by the Centre for Public Mental Health of Maastricht University in partnership with the Fund for Relief and Development of Sri Lanka. It focuses on fostering a coordinating, educational and training structure by developing didactic manuals, audiovisuals and a web site as well as contributions from the performing arts for: a) psycho-social attention to children and adults recuperating from the tsunami and a ‘Culture of preparedness’ for potential disasters (natural or human-provoked); and b) basic human values fostering a ‘Culture of Social Harmony’, respect and tolerance’ in the country.
The materials produced will be used in broadcast transmissions, by means of narrow-casting and on stage performances at schools, in the villages and camp squares, in family units, and at gatherings organised by Government services and developmental NGOs. The project uses various forms of media for both mental therapy and systematic awareness-raising on disaster preparedness and culture of social harmony. In addition, participation of children, parents, and teachers is also promoted. The project also has a research component looking into the impact and effectiveness of its approach.
