Snakes and Ladders
Since: 1999
Region: East and West Malaysia
Objective: To improve the educational support for indigenous children in rural and remote areas of Malaysia and consequently that the education will be indigenised and more relevant to them.
The project aim to ensure that children of the indigenous communities will have a good start in their early childhood education and development such that they have better performance in their primary education and other formal education in their later life. F To reach this aim, PACOS gives a lot of importance to capacity building in ECCD of the staff of different organistations form and /or working within the indigenous communities. The capacity building will exist of training on different levels but the training on basic ECCD as well as on specific skills for teachers and care givers is designed to reinforce the quality of the child's development. next to training an identified need is community and centre support. The teachers learn how to mobilise the community and how to involve them in the activities. Centralised training will also be conducted on capacity building of each partner organisation on management and planning and specific skills on ECCD such as curriculum planning, nutrition, gender, children's rights and project documentation. The Indian partner CHETNA will be the trainer while PACOS handles the organisation. PACOS coordinates the network of five NGOs working with Indigenous People (IP). They organise gatherings and meetings for the project coordinators to monitor the activities and to discuss about its progress, the budget and the activities planned. PACOS also submit the proposal which covers the five IP organisations. Monitoring and evaluation will be adopted as a strategy to build the capacity of the organisations and communities in the field of ECCD. During the project period in the three different regions, each partner will be closely monitored. The secretariat will monitor the partners regionally once in six months and the secretariat with the assistance of local organisations involved in ECD (for example PGT, PTS, PPTS and individuals from Commercial Schools) will carry out the regional evaluation once a year.
