Children's Education in Post-Tsunami Aceh
Since: 2005
Region: Aceh, Indonesia
Objective: To encourage young children’s development as well as facilitate trauma recovery by creating a supportive and child friendly environment after the Tsunami disaster.
Banda Aceh lies in the northern tip of the Sumatra Islands and is known for its rich resources. Notwithstanding this, the people live under continuous fear due to the on-going conflict between the military and the GAM (movement to free Aceh). The Tsunami disaster at the end of December 2004 caused a very high number of casualties. In the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province alone approximately 426,849 people were displaced.
The survivors who lost their properties and loved ones are suffering both emotionally and economically. Many parents are faced with economic hardship due to lack of adequate skills and employment possibilities. Others are having difficulties in just caring for and supporting their children's development. The survivors have been put into camps with complete strangers. This bears an additional burden as they have not only to cope with the effects of the disaster but also have to be alert as to whether these people show allegiance to the military or GAM. The project will work together with older siblings, parents and adolescents to create a supportive environment for young children.
