Supporting Young Children in Disaster Areas
Since: 2005
Region: Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Objective: To promote all-round development of young children by creating a supportive environment so that parents, caregivers, and community members will be better equipped with knowledge and skills to help young children overcome their traumatic conditions.
The project, to be implemented in seven camps in Malaboh, Aceh, will promote an all-round development of young children affected by the tsunami disaster. To achieve this, a support environment will be created whereby parents, caregivers and community members will be better equipped with knowledge and skills to help children overcome their social and emotional trauma.
A child development centre (CDC) and a community based organisation (CBO) will be formed to implement children and parents’ programme activities. A library and activity centre, e.g. for games, artistic and creative drawings, storytelling and so on, will also be in place whereby young children will benefit directly. The library will also be used by children from nearby villages. Parents and caregivers will receive support from the project staff on counselling and on how to care for their children.
