Foundation for Rights of Young Child
3 Ayyavu Street Ayyavu Colony CHENNAI 600 029 India
Trust Fund FORYOUCHILD
Since: 2005
Region: Tamil Nadu, India
Objective: To ensure financial sustainability so that the annual interest will be used to promote all round development of young children, whereby children’s perspectives, views on policy and decisions are respected.
India has been traditionally vulnerable to natural disasters due to its unique geo-climatic conditions. Floods, droughts, cyclone, earthquakes and landslides have been recurrent phenomena. Tamil Nadu in particular is prone to disaster either from cyclone, flood or drought. Various stakeholders are responding to such disasters in the form of relief and rehabilitation. However, there is relatively little structural response to the needs of young children affected by disaster.
With more than a decade of BvLF support, Loyola College, the partner organisation, has made remarkable progress in revitalising the Anganwadi (courtyard play centre) with more play activities. Networking with ECD organisations has put ECD on the policy agenda. However, services have not been extended to marginalised populations like migrant, street children and children affected by HIV/AIDS. These groups are more exposed to disasters as they have minimal protection.
To respond better to both the Tsunami impact and the gaps in childcare services, long-term funding in the form of a Trust Fund is envisaged. The Fund, managed by the newly-established organisation 'Foundation for Rights of Young Child (FORYOUCHILD), will provide services that promote and facilitate development of children living in socially and economically disadvantaged circumstances.
