Masifunde Njengomndeni Project

Since: 2006

Region: KwaZulu Natal province, South Africa

Objective: To improve the low literacy attainment of young children by working with them and their caregivers in more areas within the Province of KwaZulu Natal.

The project aims to strengthen the home environment as a learning environment by improving literacy skills of caregivers and their young children. The process will involve:

  • holding family literacy group sessions for adults to help improve their literacy and language skills, and to also discuss real life issues the group members face, such as effective parenting, coping with HIV/AIDS, income generation, etc.;
  • the development of community libraries for use by group members and the wider community;
  • establishing book clubs where group members (children and adults separately) meet to discuss the books they have read;
  • keeping of journals, called Umzali Nengane, by group members and their children to document conversations that enable learning;
  • home visits by group members to give support in the care and stimulation of young children to families that are not part of the project;
  • child-to-child activities held in weekly sessions with mixed age groups of children in primary schools;
  • newsletter and community notice boards that give information and news about the project;
  • skills development for income generation;
  • and the development of learning materials.
